 “High-Impact Socio-Technological Projects in Jalisco”

Presenters: César Cárdenas - Director of the Electronics Design Center, Division of Linkaged and Development, Tecnologico de Monterrey - Guadalajara Campus

Description: Since several years ago, the state of Jalisco is considered the Mexican Silicon Valley. To create a new economy, recently, several strategic projects have been promoted by the Government. Some of these projects are considered the base for the new knowledge-based economy; some are considered high social impact. Furthermore, some are considered both: high-tech and high-social impact. Most of these initiatives have the intent to impulse Jalisco’s economy to the new knowledge-based economy by means of creating dynamic innovation ecosystems. The author of this talk is Principal Investigator of some of these projects and an active participant of some other projects. The objective of this talk will be to describe mission, goals, objectives, strategies, links with international partners, architectures, components, etc. of these projects and links with other strategic projects. Based on all of these, the proponent will present a general architecture for the future Jalisco’s innovation ecosystem.  “The automotive industry in Mexico and the challenges facing a new NAFTA age”

Description: This research aims to show what are the Mexican automotive industry challenges facing the imminent renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement. Starting from a historical and economic review of this industry in Mexico, have deepened over the last t 20 years of NAFTA, and the transformations of this sector. The current claims of the three NAFTA members, the treatment renegotiation proposals in this sector are analyzed, and based on this one, two possible scenarios in the medium term and their respective expectations are considered.  “The Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara as an International Educational Destination”

Description: Guadalajara has been called an educational destination nationally and internationally, thanks to the academic offer of the universities that make up the Consortium of Cooperation and Internationalization of Higher Education of Jalisco, as well as the branding that the same Secretariat of Innovation, Science and Technology (SICYT) of the state has converted from the territory as #LaCapitalDeLaInnovación (#TheCapitalOfInnovation) as well as the different initiatives of the Jalisco Secretary of Education and the Directorate of International Affairs of the entity. The objective of the communication is to explore the potentialities and challenges of Guadalajara as an international educational destination observed from the theoretical-methodological position of territorial attractiveness. “AKXO: A Multidisciplinary, Multi-Institutional Case That Allows Us to Fly!”

Description: In September 2017 Boeing launched a competition open to all public with a huge challenge: Modify the way we move in cities based on a personal vehicle that allows you to make the typical route of Home – Office - Home in the city. An alumni of the Universidad Panamericana was interested in the challenge and invited a professor. Both accepted to take the challenge and organized a team capable of facing this competition. The result to date: involves people from 6 Mexican academic institutions, from 5 different careers, spread over 6 Mexican cities looking for the same objective and making intensive use of concurrent engineering. In recent years, the boom in the use of solar energy for water heating and the generation of electricity has allowed this industry to develop. “Beyond a Brochure: Training International Students on Sexual Assault Awareness”

Description: This session will address sexual assault and consent and will help attendees prepare to train their international students on the topic. We’ll equip attendees with an overview of staying safe, Title IX and dealing with occurrences by providing resources that they can use on campus to implement in their trainings. We will provide an overview of how to get students engaged on the topic, including active bystander training, and will conclude with effective resources that attendees can take back to their schools. Description: This paper focuses on the perception regarding studying abroad of students of Centro Universitario del Norte, CUNorte. Despite the rates of international mobility have increased in CUNorte, the empirical knowledge shows a big percentage of students who do not apply to study abroad arguing personal, economic and family reasons. We have designed a special Likert scale. The survey studies five dimensions: attitude, knowledge about student mobility options, family aspects, economic aspects and academic aspects. The proposal is based on the collaborative work of three researchers from different institutions: Universidad Nacional del Nordeste, Argentina; Universidad de Granada, Spain and Centro Universitario del Norte, University of Guadalajara, Mexico.Language for this presentation: Spanish

“The Inverted Classroom as an Exponential Change Factor for the Creators of the 4.0 Revolution”

Description: The inverted classroom is a educational technique for the formation of human capital. Constituted by interactive group learning activities within the classroom and direct individual instruction based on information technology and communication outside the classroom. The inverted classroom makes use of exponential technologies to encourage innovation in the creators of the 4.0 revolution. The inverted classroom arises in the United States of America and its entry into the academic environments of Mexico is a factor of change that allows convergence in the way of addressing the processes of teaching and learning between the two countries.  “Building an IoT smart sensor network and platform for smart classrooms”

Description: The smart devices market is growing so fast, however many of these products cannot be easily and fully integrated into a single app. This lack of standardized protocols and architectures, bring us as a consequence higher costs, complexity, duplicity, lower performance and an unnecessary time consuming setting up process when we are trying to design a fully integrated and not single-vendor dependent smart building solution. One of aims or this research thesis project is to design and develop a wireless smart sensor network with a unified protocol and architecture inspired from IoT technologies derived from our findings from a systematic literature review, that can be able to manage different smart lights manufacturers from a common API in order to connect, control and access each sensor stream of data and control a smart classroom illumination system. Description: Several problems can hinder the implementation of a successful smart classroom. As a solution, we propose a natural user interface using machine learning models to recognize handwriting directly from a traditional blackboard, enabling a teacher to change classroom ambience conditions without disrupting her/his normal activities. Also, through a systematic literature review we try to find where is the current state of the art for smart classrooms applying machine learning. Finally, we will develop a mobile application able to recognize handwriting instructions using deep learning models to control smart classroom light lamps. Language for this presentation: Spanish

Plenary Session 4: Social Innovation – Grand Challenges as Business Opportunities

Description: Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) account for a substantial and growing proportion of jobs in North America.  In the knowledge economy, enterprises can be formed as a consequence of a variety of higher education pursuits in diverse academic subject areas.  Many new enterprises are being created to address social challenges that have shared international significance.  Creating the conditions for social innovation and entrepreneurship to become a much more pervasive element in higher education and facilitating the commercialization of academic expertise are becoming increasingly important ways for higher education institutions to engage with their surrounding communities and for students and faculty to reach beyond their classrooms into their societies through their work.  Panelists will discuss the relationship between academic pursuits and social entrepreneurship and ways social entrepreneurship can be encouraged and facilitated at higher education institutions.
